What to carry into the first savings sitting
People postpone the first sitting because they think the desk expects a tidy year. The clerk, Anan, keeps a basket by the door for rubber-banded receipts. The basket is used. Bring the year you have.
Paper that helps
A passbook or a written note of wages for about six months. Any list of stall or boat takings, even if the weeks are uneven. The latest school invoice. Rent, loan, and medicine amounts that repeat. The name of the goal and the date you hope to meet it, even if the date embarrasses you.
Paper you can leave at home
Old warranties, certificates you do not understand, and every photograph of a house you admired online. If a document needs a translator, say so when you book. We would rather pause than guess at a Thai notice we have not read carefully with you.
Both adults who spend the money should come if both are able. A map signed by one person and ignored by the other is a story we have already seen. If only one of you can travel to Tambon Taba, we can put the other on the phone for the last half hour.
How the ninety minutes feel
We start with the goal, not with the scolding of last year’s spending. Then we find a thin month and ask whether the monthly line survives it. You will be asked to correct us. The sitting is finished when you recognise the month on the page as your own.
