We came in with a number for a plot and no idea which months we could spare. Lalita made us say the thin months out loud, the ones after the school term starts, and the monthly line dropped to something we have actually moved twice.
Household notes
These are notes from sittings at the Tak Bai desk. Each one names the sitting and something that happened in the room. One of them includes a delay we would rather not repeat.
We came in with a number for a plot and no idea which months we could spare. Lalita made us say the thin months out loud, the ones after the school term starts, and the monthly line dropped to something we have actually moved twice.
The sitting was for our daughter’s remaining years at the local school and a possible college year in Hat Yai. I thought we would be told to put the same sum away every month. The schedule has a smaller line now and a larger line after my wife’s contract renews in October. I still wish the written copy had arrived before Songkran. It came the week after, which was later than I had pictured.
I brought a shoebox of receipts and felt a bit foolish. The afternoon did not tidy my pride, but it showed that the stall’s good weeks were covering three quiet weeks I had been ignoring. We set the savings line from the quiet week, not the good one.
My father will stop the boat in two years. The later-life part of the map was plain: what he already holds at the bank, what the family can add, and which expenses stay with him. Nobody promised the sea would be kind. The page we left with has a date on it, March, for the first yearly look.
A longer account
Fatimah asked for a Long Horizon Plan in the hot season of 2024 because an aunt was ready to release a small house two lanes away, but not for five years. The couple’s income moved with the morning market. Some weeks covered everything. Some weeks covered rice and little else.
At the opening sitting they wanted the monthly line to match their proudest month. Lalita put that month on the left of the sheet and a poor week from the previous Ramadan period on the right. The line that survived the right-hand column was almost a third smaller. They argued, politely, and then agreed to the smaller figure because the alternative was a plan they already knew they would skip.
The written map named three purses: the house reserve, a school purse for a nephew they support, and a buffer that was not to be used for stock at the stall. The buffer was the part they disliked. It felt like idle money. In the following year the stall was closed for several weeks of family illness. The buffer paid the quiet weeks. The house reserve was not touched. Fatimah says that was the only reason the five-year date is still the same date.
At the first yearly review they raised the house line by a small amount, because a new supplier arrangement had made the thin weeks less thin. They did not raise it all the way back to the proud month. The reservation Fatimah still mentions is the travel: they would have preferred the mapping sitting in their own lane. The desk does not yet sit in clients’ houses. They came to Tambon Taba twice, and they have kept the appointment since.
